This Founder Helped Create 185,000 Jobs. Now He’s Quietly Backing the Next Wave

John Harthorne

Few individuals have done more to reshape the startup acceleration model than John Harthorne. As the Founder and former CEO of MassChallenge, Harthorne built what became the world’s largest equity-free startup accelerator, supporting over 3,000 startups without ever taking a stake. Now, as Managing Director of Two Lanterns Venture Capital, he’s continuing his mission to support high-impact founders, this time with capital.

From Boston to Tel Aviv, Harthorne’s reputation as a builder, investor, and ecosystem catalyst has made him a central figure in the global innovation economy.

MassChallenge: The Equity-Free Revolution

In 2010, Harthorne launched MassChallenge with a radical idea: create a startup accelerator that would take no equity, give away millions in cash prizes, and focus entirely on helping founders succeed. Over the next decade, the accelerator expanded to seven cities across four countries, with alumni that have:

  • Raised $8.5 billion in funding

  • Generated $3.5 billion in revenue

  • Created 185,000+ jobs globally

The impact wasn’t just scale, it was influence. MassChallenge set the tone for a new breed of accelerators focused on inclusivity, impact, and long-term founder success.

“We built something where founders felt empowered, not indebted,” Harthorne reflected during a keynote.

Under his leadership, the program delivered over $10 million in equity-free support, while pioneering programs for social impact, healthtech, and global entrepreneurship.

Two Lanterns VC: Lighting the Way for Software Startups

In 2020, Harthorne turned his attention to early-stage capital formation with Two Lanterns Venture Capital, a firm inspired by the guiding principle of empowering founders with thoughtful, early backing.

  • Fund I ($25.5M) launched with a sharp focus on U.S. and Israeli software startups, deploying capital across 35 seed-stage investments

  • Fund II (~$40M) is now in progress, reflecting strong interest in his founder-first approach

Harthorne’s track record of ecosystem building, combined with his founder empathy, makes Two Lanterns one of the most trusted seed funds operating between Boston, New York, and Tel Aviv.

Recognition and Global Engagement

Harthorne’s contributions have not gone unnoticed:

  • Named Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year (New England)

  • Honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum

  • Listed among Boston’s 50 Most Influential Business Leaders

He remains active on the global stage, supporting MassChallenge’s European expansions, advising founders, and frequently participates in global startup and investment forums.

Academic Roots and Early Momentum

Harthorne’s startup journey was shaped by a strong academic foundation:

  • MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management (Class of 2007)

  • Winner of the MIT $100K Business Plan Competition

  • Recipient of the Patrick J. McGovern Entrepreneurship Award

  • BA from Bowdoin College, where he honed his interest in policy and innovation

These early accolades set the tone for a career defined by fearless experimentation and results-oriented entrepreneurship.
