How John Rush built a multimillion-dollar SaaS empire solo

John Rush

John Rush didn’t follow the typical tech founder playbook. After more than a decade of raising capital and launching VC-backed startups, this Norwegian entrepreneur made a sharp pivot — he chose to bootstrap.

Through his company MarsX Inc, Rush has built a portfolio of profitable SaaS products, including the low-code platform MarsX.dev and website builder Unicorn Platform, which he acquired for $800,000. By focusing on efficiency, product-led growth, and developer-first solutions, Rush has scaled his ventures to a multimillion-dollar annual recurring revenue (ARR) without external funding.

As seen in Millionaire MNL, his story is a masterclass in building sustainable software businesses while staying lean and in control.

From AI engineer in Oslo to serial founder

Rush’s journey in technology began in Oslo in 2010, working for an AI monitoring software company. This early experience sparked his interest in artificial intelligence and user interaction design.

Over the next 15 years, he co-founded or launched more than 15 startups, gaining valuable insights into product development, fundraising, and startup scaling. His participation in top startup incubators gave him a front-row seat to the venture capital model, but also highlighted its limitations.

Why John Rush left venture capital for bootstrapping

After years in the VC circuit, Rush made a conscious decision to switch gears. Frustrated by the pressures of hypergrowth and external control, he turned to bootstrapping. His goal was clear — build profitable, sustainable SaaS businesses without sacrificing independence.

This shift led to the creation of MarsX.dev, a low-code development platform that accelerates app creation by reusing micro-apps. By reducing development time by up to 90%, MarsX provides developers with a faster, more efficient way to build web and mobile applications.

As of 2024, MarsX has facilitated the creation of over 261 projects, with its micro-app store expanding steadily.

The $800,000 Unicorn Platform acquisition that paid off

In a bold move, Rush acquired Unicorn Platform, a website builder for startups and indie makers, for $800,000. Under his leadership, Unicorn Platform’s user base grew from 40,000 to 200,000 users, becoming a go-to tool for no-code website creation.

This acquisition not only diversified his SaaS portfolio but also demonstrated his ability to scale existing products profitably. By leveraging his product and community expertise, Rush turned Unicorn Platform into a growth engine without external capital.

Building in public and empowering indie developers

Rush is an active contributor to the developer community, sharing his journey, product insights, and bootstrapping lessons on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn. His transparency resonates with indie makers and software developers seeking alternatives to the VC-dominated startup narrative.

Media features in Bootstrappers.com, Starter Story, and High Signal have spotlighted his unconventional approach, inspiring a new wave of founders to pursue profitability over hypergrowth.
